Frequently Asked Questions

  • 1. What is JomHiking?

JomHiking is Malaysia’s online platform that helps hikers book guided hikes with licensed Malim Gunung Perhutanan (MGP) guides. We also handle your permits, and insurance for safe, legal hikes throughout Malaysia.

  • 2. Why book a guided hike?

Guided hikes are highly recommended—especially for unfamiliar trails, waterfall routes, or regulated mountains. A licensed guide helps ensure:

    • Proper route navigation
    • Safety monitoring throughout the hike
    • Compliance with local rules and permit requirements
    • A smoother, more enjoyable experience overall

If you’re unsure where to start or prefer not to hike alone, guided hikes are a good option.

  • 3. What kind of hiking experiences can I find on JomHiking?

JomHiking offers a wide variety of private hiking experiences across Malaysia, from mountain and hill treks to waterfall adventures and coastal hikes. All trips are conducted as private trips, allowing you to hike exclusively with your own group for a more personalized and flexible experience.

Whether you're looking for a day hike, a nature getaway, or a multi-day expedition, there’s something for every fitness level and interest.

  • 4. Is JomHiking only for experienced hikers?

Not at all! JomHiking welcomes hikers of all experience levels. Whether you're an expert or a beginner, our platform offers options for everyone.

  • 5. Is this an open trip?

JomHiking does not operate open or public group trips. All experiences are arranged as private bookings.

  • 6. Who are the Malim Gunung Perhutanan (MGP)?

MGPs are licensed mountain guides recognized by the Malaysian Forestry Department. With their deep knowledge of local trails and commitment to safety, you can hike with complete confidence.

  • 7. How experienced are the MGP guides?

All MGP guides are licensed and highly experienced, trained in safety, trail navigation, and emergency response.

  • 8. Do I need an MGP guide for every hike?

Not all trails in Malaysia require an MGP guide. However, many popular hiking destinations now mandate a certified MGP guide for safety and compliance reasons. Please refer to the “Hike Information” section on each trail page to check whether a guide is required.

  • 9. Can I hike without a permit?

No. For most popular trails in Malaysia, a permit is mandatory. Hiking without a permit in a Permanent Forest Reserve (PRF) is illegal and may result in fines. JomHiking will handle all permit applications on your behalf.

  • 10. How do I book a hike?

It's as easy as 3 simple steps:

    1. Browse: Search for hikes by location, difficulty and budget.

    2. Discover: View detailed trail descriptions, itineraries, photos etc.

    3. Book: Choose your destination, select pax, confirm your dates, and pay securely.

  • 11. What happens after I book a hiking trip on JomHiking?

    Once your booking is confirmed:

    1. You will receive an email containing your payment receipt and trip confirmation details.
    2. You will be added to a WhatsApp group with your certified MGP guide and all registered participants.
    3. All updates, reminders, and important trip information will be shared in that group — and you may ask any questions there too.
    4. Meet your MGP guide at the designated meeting point on the hike day.
  • 12. Can I choose my MGP guide?

We will automatically assign the best available MGP for your trip. However, if you have a preference, we will check their availability and accommodate your request whenever possible. Please note that we cannot guarantee a specific guide will be available.

  • 13. Can I contact the guide before the hike?

Yes. Once your booking is confirmed, we will create a WhatsApp group including you and the guide to coordinate the trip.

  • 14. What is the MGP guide-to-hiker ratio?

For safety and regulatory compliance, each licensed Malim Gunung Perhutanan (MGP) guide is allowed to lead a maximum number of participants per trip. For hiking hotspots where an MGP guide is mandatory, the official guide-to-hiker ratio set by forestry regulations is 1:7 (one guide for every seven participants).

For areas where an MGP guide is optional, the applicable guide-to-hiker ratio is 1:10. If your group exceeds the permitted number of participants per guide, additional guides will be required to maintain the mandated safety ratio.

    Guide Ratio Examples (MGP-Required Areas)

    1–7 participants → 1 MGP Guide

    8–14 participants → 2 MGP Guides

    15–21 participants → 3 MGP Guides

    22–28 participants → 4 MGP Guides

    Guide Ratio Examples (MGP-Optional Areas)

    1–10 participants → 1 Guide

    11–20 participants → 2 Guides

    21–30 participants → 3 Guides

    31–40 participants → 4 Guides

  • 15. Does JomHiking offer kids-friendly hiking trips?

Absolutely! We are committed to making the joy of hiking accessible to everyone, including families and young adventurers. Our platform features a dedicated selection of kids-friendly hikes. We recommend selecting trips with a "Very Easy (0-1)" or "Easy (2-3)" difficulty rating. These trips are designed with shorter durations and engaging natural attractions to ensure a safe and fun experience for children.

  • 16. How do I know whether the hike is suitable for me?

All our hiking trips require some basic level of fitness to participate. We highly recommend you read the "Hike Information" section on the trip page, which clearly outlines the distance, elevation, difficulty rating, and other essential details. This information will provide you with a clear understanding of the hike's suitability for your fitness level.

Crucially, for all moderate and challenging hikes, participants must ensure they are adequately prepared and have trained sufficiently in advance. We advise building the necessary fitness and stamina to ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure.

  • 17. Can I customize my hike?

Absolutely! You can fully customize your hike with JomHiking. Visit our "Book Custom Hike" page to tailor your trip's trail, date, itinerary, guide number, and group size.

  • 18. What happens if it rains or the weather turns bad?

At JomHiking, your safety is our top priority. Weather conditions are carefully assessed by our certified Malim Gunung Perhutanan (MGP) guides before and during every hike. Here’s how weather-related situations are handled:

    Light Rain or Brief Drizzles:

Hikes will generally proceed as scheduled during light rain or short drizzles, with extra safety precautions in place. Participants are advised to bring appropriate rain gear such as a poncho or rain jacket.

    Severe Weather Conditions:

If severe weather occurs (e.g. heavy rain, thunderstorms, flooding, or strong winds), the MGP Guide may decide to cancel, delay, or turn back for safety reasons.

    A) If the hike has NOT started:

You may reschedule the hike within 6 months, subject to availability and any applicable price adjustments.

    B) If the hike has already started:

The guide may stop the hike and turn back if conditions become unsafe.

No refund will be issued, as guide services, permits, insurance, and logistics will have already been utilized.

  • 19. We are only a group of 3 persons, do we need to pay the full price for the MGP guide?

Yes, the MGP guide fee is considered a fixed cost per trip regardless of the group size (up to 7 participants).

However, your total cost will still be lower than a full group because you will only pay for the permits and insurance policies for three persons, as these fees are calculated on a per-person basis.

  • 20. What do the hiking difficulty ratings mean?

Our difficulty rating is a simple scale from 0 to 10 that provides a quick overview of what you can expect from a hike. We've developed this system to help you choose a trail that matches your skill and fitness level.

0-1 (Very Easy): These are leisurely walks on flat, well-maintained paths. Perfect for beginners, families, and those looking for a relaxing day out.

2-3 (Easy): Gentle trails with minimal elevation gain. They may include some uneven terrain but are generally suitable for most people.

4-5 (Moderate): Hikes with noticeable elevation gain and varied terrain. These require a decent level of fitness and may take a few hours to complete.

6-7 (Challenging): Strenuous climbs with significant elevation and technical sections. These are for experienced hikers who are prepared for a long and demanding day.

8 (Demanding): A true test of endurance with very steep inclines and difficult terrain. These trips require a high level of fitness and mental fortitude.

9-10 (Extreme): Our toughest trails, suitable only for the most seasoned and prepared hikers. These involve intense, multi-day journeys through extreme terrain and are reserved for expert adventurers.
