Gunung Jerai via Commando 69 Trail is a hardcore, off-the-beaten-path hike offering raw terrain, steep climbs, and one of Kedah’s most intense mountain experiences.
Background:

Gunung Jerai via Commando 69 Trail is the most demanding and exclusive hiking route on Gunung Jerai, designed for seasoned hikers seeking a true endurance challenge. Starting from Tupah, Kedah, this raw and rugged trail cuts through dense forest, rocky terrain, and multiple river crossings before ascending steeply toward the mountain’s upper ridges. With long stretches of relentless climbs and minimal flat sections, it offers a physically intense and mentally rewarding experience.

Unlike the more established routes, the Commando 69 Trail remains largely untouched and is rarely accessed by the public, as it is still used for training by uniformed units and typically opens only with special permission. This route brings hikers closest to the real summit of Gunung Jerai—although the actual summit remains inaccessible due to its status as a military base. The sense of remoteness, coupled with challenging terrain and moderate leech activity, makes this trail a serious undertaking best suited for advanced hikers.

Completing the Commando 69 Trail is a badge of honor among local hiking communities. For those with strong fitness, solid trail experience, and a passion for extreme hikes, this route offers one of the most intense and authentic mountain adventures in Kedah—far removed from the usual drive-up or tourist paths.
